What color season are you?

colorful clothes
A little while ago I was sitting next to a friend’s daughter as she was scoping out potential prom dresses on the internet. We start talking about color. I asked her what season she was. She looked at me like she thought I was high. “What are you talking about?” she asked. I nearly fell out of my chair.

Back in the day, EVERYONE knew what ‘season’ they were. In fact, we held home parties so consultants could come and analyze everyone. Yes, it was that important. In fact, it still is. So what am I taking about?

What colors look best on you.

Whether you want to master the world of fashion or just want to look your best, this is vital information. You've got to know your 'season.'

SIDE NOTE: If you’re a guy (and, no, you’re not the only guy who frequents my blog) don’t think you should stop reading because this is a ‘girl’ thing. You want to look good? This will help and I promise I won’t tell anyone you were here.

There are four different color seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. Sound familiar? What season you belong to depends on your skin tone and hair color.

Your skin: Are you Cool or Warm?
Skin has one of two undertones: cool/blue or warm/yellow. Sometimes you can just tell which type of skin you have. When you blush, do you get rosy or peachy cheeks? That’s one indicator. The best way is to figure out which color looks best on you is to do the orange/pink test. Put a bright orange piece of fabric (or paper) next to your face. Then do the same with something hot pink. One should definitely look better on you than the other. In fact, one might make you look kinda sickly.

If you look best in the bright orange, you have warm undertones. When you blush, you probably look more peachy than rosy. That means you’re either an Autumn or a Spring. (Helpful hint: most redheads fall into this category.) If you look best in the hot pink, you have cool undertones. When you blush, you look more rosy than peachy. That means you’re either a Winter or Summer.

As I said before, you can also take a cue from your hair color. Is your hair warm (honey blonde, strawberry blonde, auburn, golden chestnut brown) or cool (black, dark brown, ash brown, ash blonde, platinum blonde)? Once you figure this out, read on.

Autumns vs. Springs
Autumns can most easily be classified as darker versions of Springs. They typically have darker hair and eyebrows, whereas Springs have fairer complexions and lighter hair. Go back to the color test. Both seaons look best in warm colors, but the Autumn color palette is a little darker than the Spring one. Do you look better in dark chocolate brown and pumpkin (Autumn) or apricot or pastel yellow-green (Spring)?

Winters vs. Summers
Like the Autumn/Spring comparison, Winters are usually darker versions of Summers. Many have dark skin and/or olive skin, though many with fair complexions and dark hair are winters, too. Think Snow White. She's a definite Winter. As for Summers? They usually have fair complexions and lighter hair.

For a complete list of the colors that look best on you, I think the best one is in Carole Jackson’s book, ‘Color Me Beautiful.’  It came out in 1980, thus starting the ‘getting your colors done’ craze. For an incomplete but get-you-on-the-right-track’ list of colors, click the links below. I even dish on which celebrities share your season. Check 'em out:

Autumn color palette

Spring color palette

Winter color palette

Summer color palette

Anyway, I hope this helps, but before you go one final thought: These color palettes are guidelines and not a full list. Don’t shun a particular hue just because it’s not there. If you know it looks good on you, go with it. Also, if there’s a color you really love to wear but it doesn’t look good on you, just don’t wear it right up against your face. Experiment. I'm sure you can make it work.
Like all things in life, don’t follow this blindly…make that color-blindly.

Have fun! And feel free to share what season you are and any tips you may have with a comment. Despite what it says, there's no 'login' or 'sign up.' It's just there to scare away spammers. ;)

When I had red hair, I was definitely more of an autumn/spring. Now I have my natural dark hair color (has a reddish cast to it, though) I seem to look better in hunter greens, cobalt blues and more winter colors.

I am naturally blindingly pale, but slightly peachy.

Jenn,
Interesting! If you're slightly peachy, you might look best in colors that look wintery, but have a slight yellow hue added in. I bet deep turquoise looks awesome on you, and I'm not surprised about the hunter green!

K,
It sounds like steering toward warm colors is best for you, then. If you're a blonde, I bet the Spring palette looks best but that doesn't mean you can't borrow from Autumn. The reverse is true for Autumns. Still, one color palette usually is better than the two.

Oooh I love this post! I'm a color nerd and I can stare at colors for quite some time haha. I looked at the palettes and I can wear colors from Spring, Autumn & Winter. Personally, I lean more towards the warm colors of Autumn with a touch of beige, off-white. I love reds, oranges, olive greens etc. These colors also works best when I would wear brighter makeup, though I hardly use it. Gold colored jewelry suit me better as well. I have days that I'm more pale and other days I look quite tanned. I blame it on my parents!

You can do so much with colors! I often stare at makeup as well, all those pretty colors ^_^.

An artist who likes color -- go figure! I'm guessing you're an Autumn. The olive green statement is the kicker. There are a few colors on the Winter palette where if you add a touch of yellow (Chinese blue, pine green) they look fab. Plus Spring is just a light palette of the Autumn shades. I'm curious what color you're wearing when you look pale and what color you're wearing when you look tan. Maybe a difference in palette? Hmm...

Great post! I remember getting my color season "read" for me back in high school. A friend's mom (who sold cosmetics) had a bunch of color swatches that we draped around our shoulders. My friends and I then decided which colors/seasons made each of us look great (or awful)! Lots of fun - I turned out to be a winter :)

Hmm I think I wear colors with a blue tone in it. I have a blue sweater that looks fine one some days and on others not so much. It makes sense as blue is a cool tone. I also know that when you look at your veins you can tell if your warm (green veins) or cool (blue veins) I have both, but if I want to make sure that the colors always fits, I have to pick from the Autumn palette haha. When I look more tan, I think wear peachy/orange colors. It really brings out the yellow undertone in my skin. Sometimes I wear foundation, that is a big pain the *toot* as I always have to mix two colors.

Hi Janene =)

You would think as much as I love color I would know the answer to this.
I have mostly gone by what looks good, havent given much of a conscious thought about which season I was.
So now, Im thinking either Winter, or Autumn...I like silver for jewelry, --red,black,white,gray,olive green, brown & royal blue for clothes.

What do you think? I have black hair, green eyes and light olive skin, and I tan really well. --Winter or Autumn?

jay.me,
Hmmm.. With the light olive skin and silver jewelry, I would think you're a Winter. The green eyes might throw things off a little. Are they bluish green or yellowish green? I'm a Winter and I know that olive green makes me look sick. Dark brown, however, and the other colors you mention look great on me. My guess is you're a winter, but green colors accentuate your eyes, so you can get away with it. Any help?

Kiki,
Not necessarily. Complexions can be tricky. It's hard to apply hard, fast rules. The question is not only what looks good on you, but what colors make you look your best. You can still be a summer and look good in yellow, just more of a light cool yellow instead of a richer, warmer tone. As for the orange? That's a pretty standard 'warm' tone color, which puts you in more of the Spring category. Still, like I said, complexions can be tricky. The green in your eyes might make the orange pop a little more for you than most Summers. It might not be one of your power colors, but that doesn't mean you can't make it work. My feeling? From what you've told me, you're a summer who can still wear certain oranges. Probably not the bright, rich ones but the softer, cooler ones. The biggest thing is to notice how color can affect your appearance. The right colors can make your skin glow.

One night a woman in the audience came up to me and exclaimed "Every time you came back on stage, no matter what color your had on you still looked great!" Flattered, i shared the secret my late Mother had taught me. I showed her the Color Me Beautiful chart. She, just as I, was a Winter. We went shopping the very next afternoon and became close friends. Colors can help you feel better, too. Put me in mustard and I look like I am about to pass on. It really works. Choose your colors and stick with them. One tidbit that my sister-in-law, Kathleen shared with me. Winters get to wear icy colors and we can wear any icy color. Even icy mustard. How about that!

Ha ha! Colors really do make a difference, don't they? I'm a winter, too, though I've never tried icy mustard. I'll have to give it a whirl and see what happens. I have to admit, though, I'm a little tenative. Mustard has been a 'no-no' for so long I automatically steer away from it!

A girl,
Glad you like 'back in the day.' Those are always fun to write. As for your color season, if your coloring is like most Mexicans (darker eyes and hair) you're most likely to be a winter or an autumn. If so, you'll have to see what looks best on you, cooler/bluer tones or warmer/orange tones? Hope that helps.

This is a great question to ask! Every now and then I look at my wardrobe and wonder why I buy the things I do. Never really considered what colors "suit" me better than another! I do like stripes though...I like shades of red and blue...greens and purples. Can't go wrong with black and white. my favorite jackets are light green, maroon red, and navy blue! I think I fall into winter/autumn moreso than spring/summer though...even though I love orange, it doesn't look that good on me.

8/28/2012 02:51:22 am

Here's one thing I can't figure out. People say your hair color is usually what's best for your skin color. Well, my natural hair color is definitely a Winter (offblack, a few browns, no reds or golds) and my skin color is definitely an Autumn (golden brown, green veins, strong yellow undertone - a little like Beyonces). My hair looks really good when it's reddish brown, but that's not what God gave me. I also look good in browns and olive greens and so on, though my personality is certainly a Winter (in many senses of the word...I also enjoy bold colors, browns and olive greens look good but bore me). So I figure I'm just screwed then, eh? Like so much about me, even my tones are one big duality.

Reply
Mom link
8/29/2012 11:38:58 am

Screwed? NEVER! ;) This whole thing can be confusing, can't it? But from what you're saying, you sound like an autumn. There are plenty of them out there with the hair you described. Still, I hear you. Sometimes when you give your hair a little help, it draws out the best in you. As for liking winter colors, I understand that, too. Though, as a winter, I wish I looked good in olives and oranges -- particularly orange. There are so many beautiful, bold color in that hue.. My suggestion? Look for bolder colors with a hint of yellow instead of blue (ie. orange red vs. blue red). Sometimes a slight nuance in a shade can make a big difference. You can also offset color by putting a more autumnish color closer to your face. Scarves can be awesome for that.

Anyway, I hope this helps. If not, just know that I empathize. Good luck with your duality! *HUG*

Thank you for your article !
However, I feel a little confused. Actually I think I have warm skin color but cool hair color. I have Rihanna's golden skin color (I'm mixed African and French), however my hair is a very dark brown (everyone thinks it's black). When the sun shines on it, it's translucent and it becomes brownish/goldenish. My eyes are a very dark brown (looks black too). Some autumn colors are too overpowering on me (tomato red is like... too flashy for me), and earthy colors are not the best (brown does nothing for me, it's strange next to my dark hair), khaki green makes me look sick.. Same for make-up, brown and orange eyeshadows look horrible on me. I've always seen my face as a little greenish especially under my eyes so i think i'm really a warm, but could I be a spring instead of an autumn ? Or maybe my dominant characteristic is cool because of my dark hair ? I've tried winter colors but it's a little too harsh. The colors I know are good on me are medium or deep blues, I think orange brightens my face, salmon too, black is my favorite "color" ever. I've never managed to wear any red, and grey is horrible on me. I can't figure out which color of jewellry I should choose : gold is beautiful on my hands for instance, but next to my dark hair I feel like it's not the best choice. I've seen websites talking about light women of color like me being soft springs or soft summers. What do you think about it ? Sorry for my long post ! It would really help me because I want to add new things to my closet and I don't want to go for the wrong colors and then regret it. thank you

Hmm. After reading what you said, I'm thinking you might be a clear spring. Here's a link I want you to check it out:

http://www.thechicfashionista.com/spring-color-analysis.html

When you've read it, come back and tell me if that sounds right to you. I want to figure you out, too!

When you analye yourself, don't get too hung up on your eye color. That might be what is throwing you off. Skin tone is most important, followed by natural hair color. As for jewelry (silver vs. gold), perhaps a lighter gold would work best for you. The best way to find out is trial and error. The same goes for clothes, too. Using the color chart as a guide, you still have to analyze each piece as you try it on. It's amazing how a slight variation in warmth/coolness or color can make such a huge difference.

Thanks so much for your advice !

I admit I had not seen this palette because my eye color did not seem to fit in. I think this choice might be right, because I there are no browns in it and there still is black and salmon.
Plus, it made me remember things I had tried out and that seemed to fit me such as a bleached jean jacket which looked so good with my skin tone (like this : http://www.denimology.com/2008/05/denim_jackets_2.jpg), and a shiny pastel pink top I tried a long time ago. But I thought I might be wrong and always went back to the same not very joyful dark colors because I was used to it and did not even try on lighter colors (you know how they always say that if you're a brunette you mustn't wear pastel colors ? but, well, there are so many different brunettes...).

Next time I shop I'll try this palette you recommended and won't have such preconception :)

The dress may look different on you in person but, in the photo, it looks fine. From what I can tell, you look like you could be either a clear winter or a clear spring, depending on warm your coloring really is. Both have a few rich colors in them, but also some soft ones. I think I must be too biased and I just can't figure it out! Currently I'm leaning towards...all of them? lol Actually, at the moment I think I might be maybe soft autumn or soft summer? Agh! I just don't know!
I have:
- Mousy blonde/brown hair (it lightens in the sun and gets blonde-ish highlights)
- Green Eyes with a yellow center ring and gold flecks
- FRECKLES lots.
- Blue Veins in my wrists

I feel like I look blech in yellow but I also never thought I could wear turquoise/aqua yet I was gifted a top in that color and LOVE it. Sometimes I think I look good in a color, other times not so much. I'm trying to figure out if that is because it is a "secondary" color that I could wear and it only looks good when I'm looking and feeling my best and otherwise drains me? Or if it is just because I might be borderline 2 seasons and when I have my summer "glow" (I never really get very tan) I border-jump?

Your skin tone is more important than your hair though, if your hair is naturally colored, it should be in the same family. If your tone is warmer, then you are definitely a Spring or an Autumn. Springs tend to be lighter and look better in lighter shades. I'd do the color test and see if the darker, richer warm shades are more or less compatible than the lighter ones. Like ilmatar, I'm guessing Spring, too. Good luck!

I would really like to know what I am as well. I have really been trying to figure this one out for a while now.

I have naturally pale skin (sometimes I can look a bit flushed sort of "red" in the face.) I usually have to buy the lightest shade of foundation there is. My hair is naturally a medium to dark "mousy" brown. It can have sort of lighter brown/golden highlights, but it's been so long since I have seen my natural hair color all over my head. (currently it is dyed a cool toned red/brown color). If I look on the inside of my wrist (and i mean just my wrist, not my entire forearm,) I have mostly blue or purple veins, but some look a bit blue-green. ( I also have purple veins on my eyelids.) I tend to think silver looks way better on me than gold and do not like to wear yellow or orange shirts. (orange is HORRIBLE on me.) My eyes are green with yellow around my pupils. I also think that white looks better on me than off-white.

It sounds like your definitely a Winter or Summer. Orange is kryptonite for them! From there, though, it's a little hard to tell. I'd experiment with color and see what looks best on you from the Winter and Summer palattes. Deeper or lighter shades? That should help you figure it out. I've been told recently that I am probably an autumn and have gotten compliments when I wear browns, lime green, turquoise & teal, surprisingly, since I don't do green because I never know what shade of green, I have been told that mint green (light) looks good on me. Does that mean that basic, elegant black is only for winter people? I do a lot of basic black & brown.

Sorry it took a couple of days to get back to you. I'll be honest, given the colors you describe, you sound more like a Spring. They are often confused with Autumns. You should check out the color palatte links. If you ARE an Autumn, a deep chocolate will look better on you than black. If you're a Spring, a medium brown or light navy are best. But here's the thing: Black sort of has an identity all its own. I mean, why do we always hear talk about the perfect little black dress? I say, if the occassion calls for it, wear black, just see if you can add a more complimentary color closer to your skin/face. But brown should be the color that really makes you pop. I'm guessing you glow a little more in those outfits.

Recently I've become interested in discovering my season. I read the Color Me Beautiful book from the 80's.

I've narrowed it down to Spring or Autumn. For a while the only season I could rule out was winter. I determined I was warm because I have red and gold highlights in my medium brown hair. The vein test was inconclusive with me since my veins look blue-green to me.

I have very pale skin. I must get the lightest foundation available. And I have freckles. My eyes are mostly green with yellow and blue flecks.

I think my hair throws me off. On the color me beautiful web site season quiz my hair falls right in the middle of the light/dark spectrum. On my screen the hair color before and after the light/dark line look exactly the same and one of them is my hair color. Lol! I can't decide if I'm light (spring) or dark (autumn).

Your light skin suggests Spring, though you could still be an Autumn. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just test colors out. Autumns tend to look better in dark, richer colors while Springs look better in the lighter. Check out the color palettes for botha and see which look best on you -- dark or light orange? Olive green or warm pastel green? I'm betting one set of colors looks better on you. Let me know the end result. I'm curious!

What if I don't fit any of them? My natural hair color has always been a medium brown with a reddish tint, and my eyes are medium hazel/ brown, but my veins are blue, I blush pink, and I burn easily. According to the drape test I'm a warm, (gold looks better), so which do I believe? I tried the orange/ hot pink test and they both make me look washed out. Help! Completely confused. Thanks!

Actually, I think I figured it out. I used an online makeover tool (with a pic of me in natural light and no makeup- yikes!) and then tried on different hair colors to which complemented my complexion. Ok, so I now know I'm a warm for sure, so now to figure out Autumn or Spring!

I'm glad you figured it out so far. The drape test is usually the best one to go by so I'm not surprised you ended up a warm. As for the Autumn/Spring question, I'm curious what the answer is. What looks better on you -- dark or light orange? That's usually a good test. Autumns look better in darker, richer tones while Springs look better in softer, lighter ones. Curious to find out!

Well this whole thing got thrown out the window. When I had my hair dyed red my dark circles under eyes were lessened and my teeth looked whiter, but my face looked sickly. Now I dyed my hair more of a brown with no red at all and my dark circles are darker n my teeth look yellow but my face has color and I look healthy and youger. And now all the autumn colors look awful on me. Back to the drawing board I guess.

Hello I could really use your help if you would please. I have dark brown hair, very fair skin (i have always complained about how blue i look but recently I made the mistake of tanning my porcelain skin and now i can't seem to get rid of this slight yellow overcast) My eyes are a yellow golden/ash olive color with some amber. My best colors are violet/lilac/lavender purple tones, navy/sapphire blue, blue-greens, berry tones, and fuchsia/magenta colors. I do not look good in tomato red or salmon. I am attracted to the cool winter/summer colors.

I'd love to get your opinion on what season I am. How do I send a picture? I've read pretty much everything I can find about seasonal color analysis and I'm still undecided. I've been told I'm a summer twice, but I have blue/teal eyes (they change a little with what I'm wearing) with a gold ring around the middle and green veins. My skin is light to medium and I tan very easily and stay tan into the winter. I can't make my hair go ashy for anything. There's a lot of gold in it. If I dye it an ash color, it turns red or gold no matter what. If I have it dyed and toned at the salon, it's yellow/gold within a few weeks. My natural color is a light warm brown. The color I get the most compliments on is bright teal. People say it matches my eyes and makes them pop. My mom says I have to be a season that can wear light gray because she likes that color on me. I can wear soft olive green and chocolate brown. I can wear white or cream. White makes my skin look very tan, but cream is probably better next to my face. I can't wear true crayon orange, but I can wear peach and nude colors. I think I look blah in beige, but have gotten compliments on camel. I look good in some pinks. I can pull of golden blonde or light reddish brown hair but dark hair washes me out and makes me look stressed/tired. However, my eyebrows are very dark brown/almost black, which looks weird next to golden hair. I've thought about soft summer and light spring, but I really don't know. I'm fascinated by color and color analysis but can't seem to even figure out myself!

OMG, Claire! How did I miss this? I'll have to go back into my files and see if you emailed me, too. If not, I'll email you now just in case you don't see this. Anyway, you do sound like an autumn, given the darker hair plus warm burgundy looks good on them. If the greens that look good on you are darker/richer instead of lighter, that seals the deal. Otherwise, I'd check out the spring shades too.

I've looked at a lot of sites and only managed to find myself caught between summer and winter. I have cool undertones and brown hair that can't seem to decide if it wants to be light or dark. I've dyed it black before and that looked pretty good on me. My eyes are mostly blue, but they have a lot of grey in them. I have pale white skin that tans after I burn with few freckles (almost none on my face). Can you help me?

Deciding on the best hair color can be a daunting task. I wonder if you could do a little experiment. It might help you decide. Pull your hair completely back and put different cool color shades to your face, both winter (dark/bold) and summer (light/soft). One set of colors might look better on you than the other. If the lighter shades look better, you might be better with lighter hair and vice versa for the darker shades. With that said, the fact that black hair looks good on you suggests that you're a winter.

I'll have to try that sometime. I took a quiz and all it have me was the dominant trait. Apparently, I'm a "clear."

I am always confused as to what "season" and undertone I have... I have very pale skin and I look yellowish compared to most people. My hair is golden blonde with slightly auburn red undertones. My skin rarely burns but it rarely tans also. I don't blush much. I look best in gold jewelry. Most of the above evidence would fit me into a warm category - until it comes to the colors I look good in and my eye color. My eyes are deep green with deep blue edges. Eyebrows are an ashy brown color much darker than my hair. I look like DEATH in pastel or muted colors of any type - especially yellows, beige, heather grays, ivory, lavender (the WORST), celery green, baby blue, soft pink, etc. I look best in rich jewel tones and bright colors- true red, fushia pink, teal, aquamarine, black, orange, forest green, emerald green, chocolate brown, royal purple, cerulean blue, etc. Generally cool toned colors tend to look better than warm, however, thus why I am confused. I look best in black and white compared to ivory and brown, but I look much better in orange than hot pink. I think I am a "clear" instead of a "soft" because my features are very dark and contrasting for how light my skin is. But then why do I only look good in bold colors? Makeup is difficult because foundation and blush is best with warms (too much and I start to look orange), but lip color only looks decent in cools - warm anything is just gross on me, and eye colors could go either way... Please help. Am I a neutral? Do I fit in two seasons or categories?

So I am unsure about what season I fit into. I have naturally red hair that has kind of an orange tint to it. It has natural strawberry blonde/blonde highlights in it and some natural darker red highlights in it. I have light blue eyes as well. My hair makes it seem like I am warm, and my eyes would also make it seem like I am warm. However, I have a cool skin tone. I am not extremely pale, but I do have fair skin, and when I look at my wrist, my veins actually look a bluish color and purple. I do have a red/pink undertone and when I blush, my cheeks turn red/rosy. So, with this being said, I don't know which category I fall into because of the cool skin vs. warm hair and eyes. I would love feedback, though. :) Thanks.

I have to admit, you're a toughy! Given your skin tone, perhaps you could be a light summer, however I wouldn't rule out you being a light spring. Don't get hung up on the label, though. The most important thing is finding colors that look best on you.. Here are a couple links via chic fashionista. Check the different springs and summers out and see which colors look best on you. What season do you think a person like me with black hair, medium brown eyes, and olive skin (lightly tanned) with warm undertones? I know I look good in greenish teal, grays, black, maroon, vivid blue. white makes me look really dull but then.. i could pull off icy pink.. so i wasn't really sure what season i am. I often wear winter colors.. but b/c of my warm undertone im not sure.

Fist off, I want you to know I'm going to delete your follow up comment containing a link to your photo (which is GORGEOUS, btw) just because I get protective about my readers and potential internet stalker stuff. Anyway, everything you say screams winter except for your warm undertones.Even your photo -- unless the photo isn't capturing reality, I think the white shirt makes you pop. I doubt an off-white shirt would look as good on you. Keep in mind, white isn't the easiest of colors to carry off without a little summer sun in your cheeks, even for winters. Still I'm curious, do you look better in bluish teal than greenish teal? Greenish teal is a more autumn color. Still, black vs. chocolate brown? Fuchsia vs. bright orange? Black and fuchsia are winters. Chocolate and bright orange are autumns. Those are great tests, plus wearing beiges and khakis will make winters look drained. I hope this helps!

Then you might be an Autumn after all! The most important thing is understanding that some colors look better on you than others. Just keeping that in mind when you select your clothes is the real battle. I just HATE it when I see something gorgeous in a color I know won't work for me!

Hey there, I have been color typed twice as a deep autumn with the 12 Blueprint system. Husband and friends commented that I looked very ill in olive green and some of the earthy colors. I was then color typed as a cool/rose from another another company which seemed to relate to summer colors. My hair is med/dark brown with a little gray, hazel green eyes and a light skin tone. I wear Lancome Clair cool/neutral foundation and it looks like a good match. Can I send you a photo? If so, please tell me how. Thanks a bunch, Wixle.

I've had a devil of a time figuring out my palette. Any time I start to think I might fit into one, I'll try a couple of colors from that palette and they just won't work. I've had people tell me I was a winter as often as they say autumn, and I think it's because I have dark brown eyes that are only slightly warm in certain lights. But the rest of my coloring is pretty light; my skin is really fair and my hair is definitely in the lighter half of brown. I've never met anyone who is as light all over as me, but still has eyes that are almost black, and none of the palette "models" ever represent me. I also think I'm pretty neutral and very desaturated. The only red I can get away with, for example, is a dark, neutral red. It just seems that any color that's dark enough for my eyes tends to overwhelm my skin and make my hair look yellow. Sorry, I'm ranting. I like things in a neat package and it just isn't happening.

Ugh! How frustrating. All I csn say is skin tone is the most important factor. Cool tones vs. Warm tones? That is the question. What's hard is all the clothing color variants -- Is that shirt a warm turquoise or cool? A slight change in tone can make such a big difference. Don't focus on eye color so much. If you want to send me a photo, let me know and I'll contact you through email. I'll be happy to help if I can.

I'm a little bit confused about my colouring. Most signs seem to point to me being a winter, I have light to medium brown hair, my veins are mostly blue (though some of them are very greeny blue) and when I blush I get very pink. But I feel like when I look at my skin I see a bit of yellowish tint in it too? and when Iwent to my hair dresser she said my skin looked cool but my hair and eyes (hazel) looked more warm to her. I feel that I look best in deep jewel tones, especially purple and green, most blues I look good in too. But, I got this bright orange sweater for Christmas and I've had person after person tell me " wow, that is really your color" which is extremely confusing. I definitely don't think it looks awful, but that could just be that I like the color. The only colour that I think is unwearable on me is bright yellow. The other thing is jewelry- I can't discern whether silver or gold looks best on me. I lean toward silver, but gold certainly doesn't look bad. I'm confused :s Is it possible to be a little of both cool and warm seasons? My mom is a clear autumn a my dad a clear winter.... maybe I'm some kinda hybrid haha

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! My dear, for the very first time I must say you have me thoroughly confused. ;) There's a lot of mixed things going on here. From a color palette standpoint, you sound most like a deep Winter (jewel tone purples and greens minus bright yellow):

http://www.thechicfashionista.com/winter-color-analysis.html

Still, the orange has me very confused -- totally deep autumn which, btw, has some greens and purples in it:

http://www.thechicfashionista.com/autumn-color-analysis.html

And both palettes are usually reserved for people with darker coloring and you mentioned you have medium to light brown hair. Hmmm... If you'd like to send me a photo just say so and I'll contact you via email. Otherwise, I hope what I'm telling you is helpful instead of just adding to the confusion. Good luck! Just remember the main goal is finding the right colors for you. I say, try a season's colors out. If some of them work, then great! You've found additional colors that will work for you. For those that don't, just pitch them and move on. And keep in mind that a "warm" color and a "cool" color can sometimes look very similar. Just add a touch of yellow and true red turns to orange-red, a touch of blue ....I'm sure you get it.

would definitely like to send a picture. I've tried looking into it more and I feel like I am just getting myself more confused haha. I still think my gut tells me i'm a deep winter. My eyes, though they tend to change in brightness and from green to brown, I would say they are more dark hazel. which would make sense for deep winter. My hair is what really throws me. It quite a dull brown ( at least naturally), so that made me think possibly a summer or a cool winter? deep autumn is also a possibility I thought of, but I think I tend toward cool side. The conclusion I came to was I am likely a deep winter with slightly uncharacteristically light hair. Of all the celebrity photos i've seen I feel like my colouring is most similar to Jennifer Garner. Her skin is a bit lighter (mine is a bit more rosy), but hair and eye colour are virtually identical. Doesn't really explain the whole orange thing, though I don't think I agree on the commentary from my co-workers that its "my colour" - I just don't see it. I am curious to hear your thoughts though!

Hi, Katharina, a friend of me always says I'd be an autumn type, she keeps saying I'd have chestnut brown hair and all this. Now, I have another friend, Barbara, who says that the colors from the (soft) summer look best on me and I'm a bit uncertain who's right. I see a very pale, not peachy skin when I look under my wrist watch where I'm not tanned. I'd also say I have light brown hair with an ashy tone. Sometimes I can see a little bit (very little bit to say it right) of red in it. I have freckles too, but only a few in my face. I have blue eyes and there is only just a little bit of green in it. When I was a little child I had light blonde hair, like creamy honey and on the photograph of my first day in school I have dark blonde to light brown hair and I can't see a little golden tone in them like Katharina always says. And I wear a blouse the color of a white egg shell and a lavender colored skirt and I say I look really good on that photo. So would you say that I'm an autumn type or a soft summer? I'm stille a bit confused...
Greetings Ines

I have to say, you do sound like an autumn, but a deep autumn which does have more of a "pow" when it comes to its palette. There are some great colors -- like deep orange, teal blue, tomato, and warm purple. Still, I know it sucks when you don't look good in the colors you like. So the question is, what DO you like? Some colors may be out of the questionbut you might be able to find others that have a slightly warm tone. Slight variances in color can make a world of difference. Also, remember that the big thing is keeping the colors that don't flatter you away from your face. You'll look drained. Instead, incorporate them other ways. Have a dress you love that's the "wrong" color? Frame yourself with a scarf that flatters your complexion. I hope this info helps!

Hi =)

I have teal veins and eye color. My hair appears mousy but after being in the sun turns a very rich golden light brownish/blonde hair color. When I was a kid I had rich medium brown hair and tanned very easily. After coming of age my hair color lightened and became less rich and I burn more easily. My skin tone is between peach and warm pink now but in the winter it is more pale but I don't know what swatch colors to compare it to. I wore only gold or rose gold jewelry until a year ago I started wearing silver. I did drapings and winter was a major no, summer was okay but some of the pallet was too icy and light, and I looked good in some light Spring and Autumn colors. I was told I looked good in pallets all over the map. Coral colors make my skin glow and I look really good in a pink melon (orangey pink) lipstick. I still think that I could get placed into light summer, but I am have been trying Spring colors and I seem to be more tan and glowing in general. Wonder if I am a summer, spring, or autumn?

Heather,

Much -- but not all -- of what you're saying has me thinking you're a spring. Here's a great link to the various spring palettes. I'm curious if you're drawn to any of these, particularly the clear spring:

http://www.thechicfashionista.com/spring-color-analysis.html

I also found a spring swatch book that has a nice representation of all of the spring colors. (No suggestion to buy it. Just thought you should look.)

http://shop.carolthompsonbeautysecrets.com/spring-swatch-book(2400)/dp/1954

If you can't seem to find your perfect season, don't sweat it. The big thing is understanding that when you select your clothes color is key. The right colors will make you glow. If one color in a particular palette doesn't work for you, chuck it out the window and move on. We're all uniquely different and these palettes are designed for the masses. I wish you luck. Feel free to drop back in and tell me what the final verdict is. I'm curious!

Hi Mom!

Wow, so I was deterred by Spring because it was too bright and tinted my face color so I wore Soft Autumn colors for a while. Low and behold I noticed the colors that looked the most stunning from Soft Autumn palette were actually shared with Toned Spring (Soft Spring Light) from the 16 seasons system. I did many drapings and discovered Light Spring colors with a tone of grey are my best! Pale Marigold, Red/Pink Coral, Light Orange Sherbert, Warm Gray, Robin Egg Blue, and I am sure I will find more. I am so excited! Thank you for your help! I think you are so right, not every color works and some might even work from an other palette because we are unique.

Focus more on your complexion and whether you have an overall darker or fairer appearance -- though there are some nuances. Having light hair/dark eyes and vice versa can make things more complicated. Many times, the only way to truly figure yourself out is to try on colors of a palette and see where you fall. First ask yourself, is your skin tone warmer (oranges look better on you than pinks - spring/autumn) or cooler (pinks look better on you than orange- summer/winter)? That should narrow you down to two seasons. Then see which one of those two palettes looks best on you. Fairer people typically look better in the light seasons (summer and spring) whereas darker people tend to look better in autumn or fall colors. Though having a combination of elements (dark hair/light eyes) can make it more difficult, through trial and error people can usually figure out their category. Good luck and, if you'd like, you can always send me a photo. Just let me know if you would like to do it, and I'll send an email to the address you supplied with this comment.

Hi there. Hopelessly confused about my season. My veins seem between blue and green. I have about a level 6 nondescript brown hair naturally. I am freckled. Blue eyes which can appear different shades at different times. They are not light eyes. I feel like I'm in between peach and rosy. I can't ever seem to get a lighter shade of lipstick that looks right. Nude lipstick always looks awful. I get a lot of compliments in darker blues and teals. But those colors are on a few season's palettes. I have 3 kids so it's hard to justify blowing money on lipsticks to figure that part out by trial and error. Sigh. Wondering if you have any helpful insights to un-confuse me!

Dang, girl. You are a conundrum! What did you think of the other colors on the seasonal palettes? Did you look at any of them and think, "I've worn some of the other colors on this palette and they've worked (or looked awful) on me?" I think you're probably going to have to go the trial and error route. When you have some time (which can be hard with three kids), go somewhere with a mirror and lots of colors -- fabrics, clothes, construction paper, whatever. Place the colors up to your face and see which ones make you glow. That should give you a good place to start. If you want to send me a photo of you, just let me know and I'll contact you through the email address you provided.

I have pale olive skin, warm brown hair, dark brown eyes and some ruddiness to my skin because I have pink hands. Am I a dark autumn? I'll post a link to a picture of me in black. I remember I had a black t-shirt on when the picture was taken.

The photo in the link is really small, so I can't see much. You could be an autumn or winter. I'm going to send you an email and if you want to send me a photo that way, I'll take a peek. (P.S. I'm going to delete your comment with your photo link. I'm kind of protective that way.)

Wow, I can't tell what I am. Dark brown hair with slight hints of red in bright light, however the hints are harder to see over the years, light blue eyes, blue veins, freckles from being in the sun. my skin used to be fair but is closer to medium now. i still burn some but not as much as i used to. i look terrible in mustard and construction yellow and black used to make me look pale, not quite as bad now. A brownish orange or brown doesn't look too bad on me and peach lip gloss is the best. bright pink looks too bright on my lips and so does red usually, especially bright coral. A mauve or purpley red would look gross but a dark red or magenta looks better. Dark purple isn't bad, light pink looks good. It is somewhat of a mystery of what my season is and it is almost impossible to find a lipstick I like, especially if it is dark. Although raisin and brazil nut were ok. What are your thoughts?

Based on what you've told me, I think you lean most closely to being a winter. Dark browns look good on winters, though black is supposed to be a power color for you. The peach lips also call winter into question. Still, there are different colorings in the winter seasons (cool, clear, deep). Check out this link to the different types on Chic Fashionista:

I hope that helps!

Hi. I am a bit lost on this color analysis. My hair is natural red (hair dresser said that it was a medium to light auburn ). I have fair skin, and go a rosy color when I blush. I was also told that I had a cool/rosy overtone and I am yet to discover how they came to the conclusion I had a peachy undertone. My veins are a bluish green, but the nurse who does the blood test said they were a dark green. The colors that I have discovered that suit me are tangarine, wine (merlot)(my husband liked the wine red), black, chocolate /mahogany brown., clear red etc.... quite a mix. I am open to suggestions.

sorry I forgot to tell you I have blue eyes, that radiate like the spring pattern and have a pale color around the pupil. I was told previously I had 'cold/cool tone eyes'.

I am still confused what season I am. All I know is jewel tones look best on me. I have blue eyes, fair skin, and blonde hair. I thought I was a winter, but I am fair complexioned.

It is rare to be blonde and a winter, unless you're hair is white blond, but does it really matter? The whole purpose is to find out what colors look best on you. It looks like you've already done that! Still, it's possible you might be something else and have colors that make you look even more radiant. Have you looked at the summer colors? (I'm choosing that one because it deals with cool colors, like winter.) If those seem to pop more on you than the winter ones, that's what you might truly be. But if jewel tones look best, stick with them!

For the life of me I cannot figure out my season lol! I am pretty sure that I have a neutral undertone. My veins are purple, some blue in there, and some of them look green at times. My hair is just one color, a light-ish brown. It's hard to tell whether my eyebrows are black or brown.. and my eyes make it the most confusing because they are hazel, sometimes they look dark and sometimes they look light. In natural light they look light I guess . I have the light brown in the center, which flares into a color I can't discern, a muddy greenish bluish maybe? This is so hard lol, I thought I was soft autumn but it's not like I have gold in my hair, only when the sunlight hits, and I think my skin tone is lighter than most of those models which brings me to soft summer, but my eyes are not blue like them? Hmmm. I already did the gold and silver test for my skin, I just can't tell which one looks better, I think the silver? If I am neutral, does that mean there are no colors that are going to pop on me? And what palettes do neutrals fit in?

First off, sorry it took so long to reply!I wouldn't be too worried about your eye color, and even your hair color can be deceiving. Skin tone is most important. If silver is slightly better on you than gold, I'd say you could easily be a soft summer. Like I said, don't get hung up on eye color. Still, look at the soft autumn colors, too, to be sure. Focus more on what colors look best on you and less on what your personal characteristics are. Does olive green (soft autumn) look better on you than bluish green (soft summer)? Cooler tones = summer (like light fushia) and warmer tones = autumn like (salmon). Also, your question on color popping is an interesting one. People who are soft-colored tend to look best in more muted colors, which some people equate with "boring" because the colors, themselves don't pop. But that doesn't mean YOU don't pop, though it would probably be best described as a glow. Here's a link to my favorite website when it comes to figuring out your color, Chic Fashionista. It details soft autumns and soft summers. See if either color palette works for you.

I am obsessed with colors. I have been color tested, the result was confusing. The tester could not decide between spring or summer. Lots of money spent ,no results were received. I have hair that is hard to describe. Naturally grey is silver blonde. Dye turns it red or gold as it fades. Ash turns green. My eyes are blue, my skin is medium beige. I look good in camel, teal, but do not like pastels or pink. Help find my balance. I wear gold jewelry or a combo of gold ,silver. Not a fan of black hills gold. I am confused. Ya Ya

Based on the colors you say you look good and bad in, it sounds like you belong to a warm season instead of a cool. No summer for you! You are either an Autumn or a Spring. Camel looks good on both Autumns and Springs. Teal is more of an Autumn color. Essentially, the Spring palette features softer, lighter versions of the Autumn palette. Here's a link to more extensive color palettes for both. (You'll have to scroll down). Do any appeal to you more?

http://www.colormepretty.co/categories-2/4-season-color-analysis/

And don't waste any more money on analysis! The best thing you can do is go to a clothing store and try on a variety of colors to see which look best on you. You could also go to a fabric store and bring a mirror. Hold colors up to your face and see which ones make you pop. Good luck!

Hello! I need some help with colors. I've never considered my color palette until recently because I've wanted to pare down my wardrobe to be more minimalist and functional. I really need help figuring out my colors.

I have medium blue eyes and I've been told I have ash brown hair or light brown hair! I'm Caucasian and I generally get a red tone when I exercise and I think I have a goldish undertone in general. My friend classified me as an autumn. What do you think?

One more question - would light grey or dark grey be better for an autumn?

Thank you so much! I'm 32 and clueless about fashion.

Hello,

I am having trouble identifying what season I am, since most sites use medium brown hair as the division point between light and dark hair colors, and I have medium brown hair. I also have medium brown eyes, so for a while I thought I was a form of autumn. However, I also have skin that never really tans, so I don't really think I have a warm skin tone. I am pretty pale (someone once said peachy), but I also burn in the sun and never tan. In addition, I have always favored certain wardrobe colors (navy blues, dark blues, dusty blues, burgundy, black, dark grey), though that may just be preference.
If you could help me clear things up, that would be great,
-Anika

Anika,

I have the exact same problem. It seems the only choices for brown eyes in color analysis are black/brown red brown with a noticeable lblack limbal ring or amber. I have none of the above, but my eyes are brown. I also have medium to light brown natural hair and very fair skin so I don't know if I'm dark or light- I can't seem to wear anything too warm (think mustard), and brown looks terrible on me unless it's a really dark brown, but then anything too bright, deep or cool also washes me out. The only colors I can really rock are Coral, pink, turquoise, and of course greys. <sigh>
