colorful clothes
A little while ago I was sitting next to a friend’s daughter as she was scoping out potential prom dresses on the internet. We start talking about color. I asked her what season she was. She looked at me like she thought I was high. “What are you talking about?” she asked. I nearly fell out of my chair.

Back in the day, EVERYONE knew what ‘season’ they were. In fact, we held home parties so consultants could come and analyze everyone. Yes, it was that important. In fact, it still is. So what am I taking about?

What colors look best on you.

Whether you want to master the world of fashion or just want to look your best, this is vital information. You've got to know your 'season.'

SIDE NOTE: If you’re a guy (and, no, you’re not the only guy who frequents my blog) don’t think you should stop reading because this is a ‘girl’ thing. You want to look good? This will help and I promise I won’t tell anyone you were here.

There are four different color seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. Sound familiar? What season you belong to depends on your skin tone and hair color.

Your skin: Are you Cool or Warm?
Skin has one of two undertones: cool/blue or warm/yellow. Sometimes you can just tell which type of skin you have. When you blush, do you get rosy or peachy cheeks? That’s one indicator. The best way is to figure out which color looks best on you is to do the orange/pink test. Put a bright orange piece of fabric (or paper) next to your face. Then do the same with something hot pink. One should definitely look better on you than the other. In fact, one might make you look kinda sickly.

If you look best in the bright orange, you have warm undertones. When you blush, you probably look more peachy than rosy. That means you’re either an Autumn or a Spring. (Helpful hint: most redheads fall into this category.) If you look best in the hot pink, you have cool undertones. When you blush, you look more rosy than peachy. That means you’re either a Winter or Summer.

As I said before, you can also take a cue from your hair color. Is your hair warm (honey blonde, strawberry blonde, auburn, golden chestnut brown) or cool (black, dark brown, ash brown, ash blonde, platinum blonde)? Once you figure this out, read on.

Autumns vs. Springs
Autumns can most easily be classified as darker versions of Springs. They typically have darker hair and eyebrows, whereas Springs have fairer complexions and lighter hair. Go back to the color test. Both seaons look best in warm colors, but the Autumn color palette is a little darker than the Spring one. Do you look better in dark chocolate brown and pumpkin (Autumn) or apricot or pastel yellow-green (Spring)?

Winters vs. Summers
Like the Autumn/Spring comparison, Winters are usually darker versions of Summers. Many have dark skin and/or olive skin, though many with fair complexions and dark hair are winters, too. Think Snow White. She's a definite Winter. As for Summers? They usually have fair complexions and lighter hair.

For a complete list of the colors that look best on you, I think the best one is in Carole Jackson’s book, ‘Color Me Beautiful.’  It came out in 1980, thus starting the ‘getting your colors done’ craze. For an incomplete but get-you-on-the-right-track’ list of colors, click the links below. I even dish on which celebrities share your season. Check 'em out:

Autumn color palette

Spring color palette

Winter color palette

Summer color palette

Anyway, I hope this helps, but before you go one final thought: These color palettes are guidelines and not a full list. Don’t shun a particular hue just because it’s not there. If you know it looks good on you, go with it. Also, if there’s a color you really love to wear but it doesn’t look good on you, just don’t wear it right up against your face. Experiment. I'm sure you can make it work.
Like all things in life, don’t follow this blindly…make that color-blindly.

Have fun! And feel free to share what season you are and any tips you may have with a comment. Despite what it says, there's no 'login' or 'sign up.' It's just there to scare away spammers. ;)

When I had red hair, I was definitely more of an autumn/spring. Now I have my natural dark hair color (has a reddish cast to it, though) I seem to look better in hunter greens, cobalt blues and more winter colors.

I am naturally blindingly pale, but slightly peachy.

Jenn,
Interesting! If you're slightly peachy, you might look best in colors that look wintery, but have a slight yellow hue added in. I bet deep turquoise looks awesome on you, and I'm not surprised about the hunter green!

K,
It sounds like steering toward warm colors is best for you, then. If you're a blonde, I bet the Spring palette looks best but that doesn't mean you can't borrow from Autumn. The reverse is true for Autumns. Still, one color palette usually is better than the two.

Oooh I love this post! I'm a color nerd and I can stare at colors for quite some time haha. I looked at the palettes and I can wear colors from Spring, Autumn & Winter. Personally, I lean more towards the warm colors of Autumn with a touch of beige, off-white. I love reds, oranges, olive greens etc. These colors also works best when I would wear brighter makeup, though I hardly use it. Gold colored jewelry suit me better as well. I have days that I'm more pale and other days I look quite tanned. I blame it on my parents!

You can do so much with colors! I often stare at makeup as well, all those pretty colors ^_^.

An artist who likes color -- go figure! I'm guessing you're an Autumn. The olive green statement is the kicker. There are a few colors on the Winter palette where if you add a touch of yellow (Chinese blue, pine green) they look fab. Plus Spring is just a light palette of the Autumn shades. I'm curious what color you're wearing when you look pale and what color you're wearing when you look tan. Maybe a difference in palette? Hmm...

Great post! I remember getting my color season "read" for me back in high school. A friend's mom (who sold cosmetics) had a bunch of color swatches that we draped around our shoulders. My friends and I then decided which colors/seasons made each of us look great (or awful)! Lots of fun - I turned out to be a winter :)

Hmm I think I wear colors with a blue tone in it. I have a blue sweater that looks fine one some days and on others not so much. It makes sense as blue is a cool tone. I also know that when you look at your veins you can tell if your warm (green veins) or cool (blue veins) I have both, but if I want to make sure that the colors always fits, I have to pick from the Autumn palette haha. When I look more tan, I think wear peachy/orange colors. It really brings out the yellow undertone in my skin. Sometimes I wear foundation, that is a big pain the *toot* as I always have to mix two colors.

Hi Janene =)

You would think as much as I love color I would know the answer to this.
I have mostly gone by what looks good, havent given much of a conscious thought about which season I was.
So now, Im thinking either Winter, or Autumn...I like silver for jewelry, --red,black,white,gray,olive green, brown & royal blue for clothes.

What do you think? I have black hair, green eyes and light olive skin, and I tan really well. --Winter or Autumn?

jay.me,
Hmmm.. With the light olive skin and silver jewelry, I would think you're a Winter. The green eyes might throw things off a little. Are they bluish green or yellowish green? I'm a Winter and I know that olive green makes me look sick. Dark brown, however, and the other colors you mention look great on me. My guess is you're a winter, but green colors accentuate your eyes, so you can get away with it. Any help?

Kiki,
Not necessarily. Complexions can be tricky. It's hard to apply hard, fast rules. The question is not only what looks good on you, but what colors make you look your best. You can still be a summer and look good in yellow, just more of a light cool yellow instead of a richer, warmer tone. As for the orange? That's a pretty standard 'warm' tone color, which puts you in more of the Spring category. Still, like I said, complexions can be tricky. The green in your eyes might make the orange pop a little more for you than most Summers. It might not be one of your power colors, but that doesn't mean you can't make it work. My feeling? From what you've told me, you're a summer who can still wear certain oranges. Probably not the bright, rich ones but the softer, cooler ones. The biggest thing is to notice how color can affect your appearance. The right colors can make your skin glow.

One night a woman in the audience came up to me and exclaimed "Every time you came back on stage, no matter what color your had on you still looked great!" Flattered, i shared the secret my late Mother had taught me. I showed her the Color Me Beautiful chart. She, just as I, was a Winter. We went shopping the very next afternoon and became close friends. Colors can help you feel better, too. Put me in mustard and I look like I am about to pass on. It really works. Choose your colors and stick with them. One tidbit that my sister-in-law, Kathleen shared with me. Winters get to wear icy colors and we can wear any icy color. Even icy mustard. How about that!

Glad you like 'back in the day.' Those are always fun to write. As for your color season, if your coloring is like most Mexicans (darker eyes and hair) you're most likely to be a winter or an autumn. If so, you'll have to see what looks best on you, cooler/bluer tones or warmer/orange tones? Hope that helps.

This is a great question to ask! Every now and then I look at my wardrobe and wonder why I buy the things I do. Never really considered what colors "suit" me better than another! I do like stripes though...I like shades of red and blue...greens and purples. Can't go wrong with black and white. my favorite jackets are light green, maroon red, and navy blue! I think I fall into winter/autumn moreso than spring/summer though...even though I love orange, it doesn't look that good on me.

AJ
08/28/2012 09:51

Here's one thing I can't figure out. People say your hair color is usually what's best for your skin color. Well, my natural hair color is definitely a Winter (offblack, a few browns, no reds or golds) and my skin color is definitely an Autumn (golden brown, green veins, strong yellow undertone - a little like Beyonces). My hair looks really good when it's reddish brown, but that's not what God gave me. I also look good in browns and olive greens and so on, though my personality is certainly a Winter (in many senses of the word...I also enjoy bold colors, browns and olive greens look good but bore me). So I figure I'm just screwed then, eh? Like so much about me, even my tones are one big duality.

Reply
08/29/2012 18:38

Screwed? NEVER! ;) This whole thing can be confusing, can't it? But from what you're saying, you sound like an autumn. There are plenty of them out there with the hair you described. Still, I hear you. Sometimes when you give your hair a little help, it draws out the best in you. As for liking winter colors, I understand that, too. Though, as a winter, I wish I looked good in olives and oranges -- particularly orange. There are so many beautiful, bold color in that hue.. My suggestion? Look for bolder colors with a hint of yellow instead of blue (ie. orange red vs. blue red). Sometimes a slight nuance in a shade can make a big difference. You can also offset color by putting a more autumnish color closer to your face. Scarves can be awesome for that.

Anyway, I hope this helps. If not, just know that I empathize. Good luck with your duality! *HUG*

Thank you for your article !
However, I feel a little confused. Actually I think I have warm skin color but cool hair color. I have Rihanna's golden skin color (I'm mixed African and French), however my hair is a very dark brown (everyone thinks it's black). When the sun shines on it, it's translucent and it becomes brownish/goldenish. My eyes are a very dark brown (looks black too). Some autumn colors are too overpowering on me (tomato red is like... too flashy for me), and earthy colors are not the best (brown does nothing for me, it's strange next to my dark hair), khaki green makes me look sick.. Same for make-up, brown and orange eyeshadows look horrible on me. I've always seen my face as a little greenish especially under my eyes so i think i'm really a warm, but could I be a spring instead of an autumn ? Or maybe my dominant characteristic is cool because of my dark hair ? I've tried winter colors but it's a little too harsh. The colors I know are good on me are medium or deep blues, I think orange brightens my face, salmon too, black is my favorite "color" ever. I've never managed to wear any red, and grey is horrible on me. I can't figure out which color of jewellry I should choose : gold is beautiful on my hands for instance, but next to my dark hair I feel like it's not the best choice. I've seen websites talking about light women of color like me being soft springs or soft summers. What do you think about it ? Sorry for my long post ! It would really help me because I want to add new things to my closet and I don't want to go for the wrong colors and then regret it. thank you

Hmm. After reading what you said, I'm thinking you might be a clear spring. Here's a link I want you to check it out:

http://www.thechicfashionista.com/spring-color-analysis.html

When you've read it, come back and tell me if that sounds right to you. I want to figure you out, too!

When you analye yourself, don't get too hung up on your eye color. That might be what is throwing you off. Skin tone is most important, followed by natural hair color. As for jewelry (silver vs. gold), perhaps a lighter gold would work best for you. The best way to find out is trial and error. The same goes for clothes, too. Using the color chart as a guide, you still have to analyze each piece as you try it on. It's amazing how a slight variation in warmth/coolness or color can make such a huge difference.

Thanks so much for your advice !

I admit I had not seen this palette because my eye color did not seem to fit in. I think this choice might be right, because I there are no browns in it and there still is black and salmon.
Plus, it made me remember things I had tried out and that seemed to fit me such as a bleached jean jacket which looked so good with my skin tone (like this : http://www.denimology.com/2008/05/denim_jackets_2.jpg), and a shiny pastel pink top I tried a long time ago. But I thought I might be wrong and always went back to the same not very joyful dark colors because I was used to it and did not even try on lighter colors (you know how they always say that if you're a brunette you mustn't wear pastel colors ? but, well, there are so many different brunettes...).

Next time I shop I'll try this palette you recommended and won't have such preconception :)

That would mean cooler tones are better for you -- hot pink looks better on you than orange. Is that the case? The dress may look different on you in person but, in the photo, it looks fine. Please help! I'm trying to figure out my colors/season and I'm totally lost. I'll be firmly convince of one and then several minutes later be just as convinced I'm another. I think I must be too biased and I just can't figure it out! Currently I'm leaning towards...all of them? lol Actually, at the moment I think I might be maybe soft autumn or soft summer? Agh! I just don't know!
I have:
- Mousy blonde/brown hair (it lightens in the sun and gets blonde-ish highlights)
- Green Eyes with a yellow center ring and gold flecks
- FRECKLES lots.
- Blue Veins in my wrists

I feel like I look blech in yellow but I also never thought I could wear turquoise/aqua yet I was gifted a top in that color and LOVE it. Sometimes I think I look good in a color, other times not so much. I'm trying to figure out if that is because it is a "secondary" color that I could wear and it only looks good when I'm looking and feeling my best and otherwise drains me? Or if it is just because I might be borderline 2 seasons and when I have my summer "glow" (I never really get very tan) I border-jump?

Your skin tone is more important than your hair though, if your hair is naturally colored, it should be in the same family. If your tone is warmer, then you are definitely a Spring or an Autumn. Springs tend to be lighter and look better in lighter shades. I'd do the color test and see if the darker, richer warm shades are more or less compatible than the lighter ones. Like ilmatar, I'm guessing Spring, too. Good luck!

I would really like to know what I am as well. I have really been trying to figure this one out for a while now.

I have naturally pale skin (sometimes I can look a bit flushed sort of "red" in the face.) I usually have to buy the lightest shade of foundation there is. My hair is naturally a medium to dark "mousy" brown. It can have sort of lighter brown/golden highlights, but it's been so long since I have seen my natural hair color all over my head. (currently it is dyed a cool toned red/brown color). If I look on the inside of my wrist (and i mean just my wrist, not my entire forearm,) I have mostly blue or purple veins, but some look a bit blue-green. ( I also have purple veins on my eyelids.) I tend to think silver looks way better on me than gold and do not like to wear yellow or orange shirts. (orange is HORRIBLE on me.) My eyes are green with yellow around my pupils. I also think that white looks better on me than off-white.

I've been told recently that I am probably an autumn and have gotten compliments when I wear browns, lime green, turquoise & teal, surprisingly, since I don't do green because I never know what shade of green, I have been told that mint green (light) looks good on me. Does that mean that basic, elegant black is only for winter people? I do a lot of basic black & brown.

Sorry it took a couple of days to get back to you. I'll be honest, given the colors you describe, you sound more like a Spring. They are often confused with Autumns. You should check out the color palatte links. If you ARE an Autumn, a deep chocolate will look better on you than black. If you're a Spring, a medium brown or light navy are best. But here's the thing: Black sort of has an identity all its own. I mean, why do we always hear talk about the perfect little black dress? I say, if the occassion calls for it, wear black, just see if you can add a more complimentary color closer to your skin/face. But brown should be the color that really makes you pop. I'm guessing you glow a little more in those outfits.
